Erectile Dysfunction

There is nothing a woman wants more than a guy who can last longer in bed, and give her that satisfying sexual experience. So what happens when her man cannot get an erection when she is all horny and wet, or when he can’t seem to keep his erection?

First, let’s talk about how an erection works. An erection occurs as a result of increased blood flow to the penis.

This blood flow is usually stimulated by sexual thoughts or direct contact with the penis. During the process of these erotic thoughts or sexual contact, the muscles in the penis relax; this results in six times the blood flow to the penis.

An erection may last indefinitely, if not for chemicals in the body called phosphodiesterases. This is what reverses the hardening of the penis, and brings it back to its flaccid state. In simple terms, the erection comes to an end.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or keep the penis firm enough to have sex. Erectile dysfunction is not uncommon. Many men experience it during times of stress.

However, frequent ED can be a sign of health problems that need treatment, and it can also be a sign of relationship difficulties which can be addressed by a professional. Note, not all male sexual problems are however caused by ED.

  • Stress

Boost your erection

Do not lose hope; there is a whole lot that can be done, to help you get and keep your erection. This would range from altering your lifestyle, to getting medical treatment, and seeing a therapist.

Lifestyle

For Erectile Dysfunction symptoms that do not require medical treatment, the following can boost erection.

a. Exercise

This is the best way to strengthen your heart and your erection too. A healthy heart means that blood gets to flow to the penis. Exercise increases stamina, strength and flexibility.

To achieve a firm erection, blood flows to the penis six times more. So ideally, a stronger heart means a firmer erection. You can start by taking walks, going to the gym. The main point here is to keep exercising.

b. Healthy Diet

Any diet that is good for your heart will also be good for your penis. Diets that includes few fruits and vegetables, with a lot of fatty foods and fries will decrease the circulation of blood in the body. You would want to eat enough fruits and vegetables, whole grains and heart-healthy fats instead.

c. Maintain a healthy weight

Overweight or obesity poses a risk for erectile dysfunction. This is because excess belly fat can interfere with the body’s ability to send blood to the penis.

It can also result in a decrease in production of testosterone. Reducing body fat will help boost your erection.

d. Get enough sleep

Inadequate sleep will increase your risk to heart problems, reduce metabolism and weaken your immune system. It may also reduce the production of testosterone, which increases the chances of experiencing erectile dysfunction.

e. Reduce stress

This is silent and deadliest. Unchecked stress can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Stressing your self, may distort the overall functioning of your body, this may reduce the flow of blood, and reduce erection. It is important for your overall (and sexual) health, to manage stress.

f. Reduce alcohol and smoking

Men who indulge in alcoholism and excessive smoking are more prone to erectile dysfunction than men who don’t.

Smoking damages your blood vessels, while alcohol is a nervous system depressant, and can block messages between the brain and the body. Reducing alcohol consumption and smoking will lead to a firmer erection.

g. Avoid risky sex

Some cases of erectile dysfunction are caused by injuries to the penis during sex. Avoid sex positions that are not comfortable for you.

Medical Treatment

Your doctor may prescribe medications to help manage erectile dysfunction. These medications may have side effects.

You should talk to your doctor about the unpleasant side effects. Medications such as alprostadil (Caverject), sildenafil (Viagra), avanafil (stendra) etc., stimulates blood flow to your penis and helps in the treatment of Erectile dysfunction.

Natural herbs and supplements may also contribute to the treatment of ED. You may, however, want to buy recommended and prescribed brands.

See a Therapist

Some cases of erectile dysfunction are caused by emotional and relationship issues. This can lead to depression, and lack of interest for sex among others.
